Conquering Mt. Kilimanjaro (by Mina Changela)

A life changing experience of climbing Mount Kilimanjaro (The tallest free standing mountain in the world).

I was filled with excitement to touch the feet of Mother Earth on the foothills of the rainforest on Mount Kilimanjaro.

The spiritual journey through the rainforest was a visual appreciation of nature’s creation.

The primeval rainforest was a labyrinth of vibrant colours, a canopy of a creative symphony of unseen beauty.

The whispering sounds of the animal species pulsated life into the rainforest.

The heather and moorland zone was steep and challenging.

That evening on camp the stars dazzled and twinkled and covered the luminous sky.

The mountainous peak was surrounded by everlasting flowers and beautiful groundsel (senecio) trees.

The Barranco wall, the natural rock face was an experience that I had to face my fears on the kissing rock and navigate my steps with precision to the other side. My body was shaking with fear since I suffer vertigo and have a condition of mental health called Schizo affective disorder.

The day of the summit to Uhuru Peak began in the dark through the Arctic zone. The temperature was extremely cold. At this point I was praying to God for his blessings and he gave me strength at every step I took. I kept a positive mind and we conquered our dream and summited to the top on Uhuru Peak. That day we trekked for 18 hours.

The adventure I will never forget, it was a life changing experience.

Mina and Nitin Changela have helped raised thousands of pounds for El Shaddai, not just this year, but over many years. An amazing couple that put their heart and soul into fundraising to help better the lives of the children in our care and those we reach out to in the local communities. Well done!
