Volunteering with El Shaddai – a new sense of purpose and joy!

We have been in the incredibly fortunate position of volunteering for El Shaddai in Goa again this year, and it has been an experience that has left us feeling inspired, grateful, and deeply connected to the community we were welcomed into.

During our time there, we volunteered at Shanti Niketan International School, where we helped teach basic maths and English classes. Rather than relying only on traditional teaching methods, we tried to make the lessons as engaging and enjoyable as possible. We introduced simple games, interactive activities and fun challenges to help the children learn. Seeing the children laugh, collaborate and proudly share what they had learned was one of the most rewarding parts of the experience.

What made the experience truly special, however, was the warmth and generosity of everyone we met. From the very first day, the staff, volunteers and students made us feel incredibly welcome.

There was a strong sense of community throughout the school and the wider El Shaddai organisation. Everyone worked together with a shared purpose: to support the children and give them the best opportunities possible.

Volunteering here reminded us that sometimes the simplest interactions like playing a game, helping with a spelling word, or sharing a laugh in the classroom, can have a powerful impact. It was not just about what we were able to teach, but also about the relationships we built and the joy we shared with the children.

Leaving Goa, we felt we had gained far more than we had given. The kindness, resilience and enthusiasm of the students and staff left a lasting impression on us. It gave us a renewed sense of purpose and a deep appreciation for the power of community, education, and human connection. We will definitely be back next year!
