This summer, two spirited volunteers, Anthea (59) and Mike (66), are tackling the 35-mile Gower Coast Path in a way you’ve probably never seen before: by kicking a football the entire way!
Their four-day trek along clifftop paths and over country stiles is more than just a physical challenge – it’s a heartfelt fundraiser inspired by their recent volunteering experience at the Shanti Niketan International School in Assagao, Goa. Mike and Anthea spent four weeks at the school in February and were moved by the kindness of the staff and the resilience of the children.
“At Shanti Niketan, about half the children play football barefoot on hard, stony ground,” says Mike. “Sport is a huge part of the school’s ethos – it brings kids together and helps them grow as kind, confident individuals. We just wanted to give something back.”
Their goal? To raise funds for football and cricket equipment—boots, socks, shirts, goalkeeper gloves for both the boys’ and girls’ teams at the school. The equipment will help the children train safely, take part in their local league and build vital connections with neighbouring schools.
Every penny donated will go directly to the cause. Mike and Anthea would like to remind donors to drag the GoFundMe “tip” slider to zero and tick the Gift Aid box to boost their contribution by 25% at no extra cost.
Update: Weather has interrupted the walk slightly and Mike is recovering from a calf strain picked up during a pre-walk kickabout. So far, they’ve covered the route from Llanrhidian to Rhossili and plan to complete the rest when the path is busier, giving them more chances to meet people and raise awareness (and maybe even collect a few spontaneous donations!).
