Alick and Kathryn Lavers, Child Sponsors write about their experience sponsoring Mallamma
One Sunday about twenty years ago, Kathryn and I were privileged to find ourselves sitting next to Anita in our church, where she had been invited by our vicar to tell us of her work. As a result of her presentation, we have sponsored a child in El Shaddai ever since.
We sponsored one girl who had been taken in by El Shaddai when she was only seven years old. Her parents did not believe that a girl should go to school but eventually agreed to her being educated and cared for by the charity. Mallamma could only speak the local language but subsequently learned English and Hindi; she was given the chance to study and prove herself and she reacted by giving of her best. In 2016, she topped the Higher Secondary School examination with a record 91% and went on to enter university where she took her master’s degree and fulfilled her dream to become a Chartered Accountant. She has since been appointed to a major local Bank where she is happily earning a serious salary.
We are so very proud and delighted to have been associated with this enthusiastic young lady’s incredible success story, which makes Pygmalion seem like a fairy tale.
